Few in Washington expected the friendship between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk to collapse so quickly after it grabbed headlines in early 2025. What started as a high-profile partnership aimed at streamlining government operations turned into a public feud that dominated social media for months. Here’s a timeline of their dramatic split.

October 2024 — First Public Appearance Together

The Trump-Musk alliance began during the 2024 presidential campaign. Following an assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, Musk publicly endorsed the president on X and donated over $200 million to Trump’s campaign through America PAC. Their first in-person appearance was on October 5, 2024, when Musk joined Trump at a rally in Butler, just a month before Election Day.

November 2024 — Musk Appointed to Lead DOGE

After Trump’s victory, Musk was named head of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). During a Mar-a-Lago event, Trump called Musk “a star is born,” and weeks later, they attended a SpaceX Starship launch together.

January 2025 — Inauguration Day

Trump formally established DOGE on Inauguration Day, signing an executive order aimed at cutting government waste and modernizing federal technology. Musk joined other tech leaders, including Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, and Mark Zuckerberg, to celebrate the inauguration.

Early 2025 — DOGE Implements Cost Cuts

Musk and DOGE began implementing aggressive cost-cutting measures. By October, DOGE had reportedly saved $214 billion through asset sales, program reforms, workforce reductions, and other efficiency efforts. These moves, however, sparked protests nationwide and drew criticism toward Musk and Trump’s administration. Tesla also faced vandalism attacks, prompting Trump to publicly support Musk by showcasing Tesla vehicles on the White House South Lawn.

May 2025 — Musk Steps Down from DOGE

Musk reduced his role at DOGE due to government limits on “special employees,” leaving on May 30. On his final day, he and Trump held a press conference in the Oval Office celebrating Musk’s achievements.

June 2025 — Public Fallout over OBBB

Tensions flared after Musk criticized Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB), calling it wasteful and pork-filled. Trump expressed disappointment and warned Musk on social media, leading to a back-and-forth feud. Musk claimed his efforts had been crucial for Trump’s election success and pressed for EV and solar incentives. The White House described the feud as a disagreement over policy priorities.

July 2025 — Congress Passes OBBB

Despite Musk’s criticism, Congress narrowly passed the bill by a self-imposed July 4 deadline, but the tension between Trump and Musk continued to simmer.

September–October 2025 — Reconciliation Hints

The two reunited briefly at conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s memorial in September. By October, Trump offered more conciliatory remarks, acknowledging Musk as “a very capable guy” while noting their relationship had ups and downs.

November–December 2025 — Moving Forward

Musk returned to the White House in November for a dinner with the Saudi Crown Prince. By December, the media observed that their feud had calmed, though Trump noted he wasn’t sure if Musk was fully back in his inner circle.

Trump’s Foreign Policy Dilemma Deepens Amid Rising Iran Tensions Tensions between the United States and Iran have put President Donald Trump’s foreign policy back in the spotlight. During a recent meeting of the Board of Peace, a Middle East coalition he created, Trump delivered a fresh warning to Tehran. He called for peace but also threatened military action. That contrast shows the core struggle shaping his second term. Diplomacy or Military Pressure? Trump says he prefers a diplomatic agreement that would end Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions. A White House official recently said Iran would be “very wise” to reach a deal. However, the administration has increased pressure in recent weeks. Trump ordered a major military buildup in the Middle East. Analysts describe it as the largest US deployment in the region since the Iraq War in 2003. This approach raises questions. Trump often signals he wants negotiations. At the same time, he strengthens military options. That mix leaves allies and critics unsure about his final goal. The Shadow of Past Military Action Some observers argue that Trump uses strong language to gain leverage. Yet recent history suggests his threats carry weight. Earlier this year, the US carried out an operation against Venezuela. That mission led to the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro. The administration defined the objective narrowly and claimed success. Iran presents a more complex challenge. Trump insists that a US strike last June “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear facilities. If that is true, critics ask why another strike would be necessary. The White House has not clearly explained its new targets or expected results. Nuclear Talks at a Standstill Washington and Tehran have held indirect talks. These discussions focus on uranium enrichment and Iran’s nuclear programme. Iran has signaled openness to negotiations. However, talks have stalled. The US wants Iran to limit its ballistic missile programme and reduce support for proxy groups across the region. Sanctions and domestic protests have weakened Iran’s leadership under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Even so, Tehran has not agreed to broader US demands. The diplomatic path remains uncertain. Strategic Risks and Regional Impact A new US strike could trigger serious consequences. Iran may target American military bases in the region. A prolonged conflict could also disrupt US goals in the Middle East. That includes efforts tied to rebuilding Gaza through the Board of Peace initiative. Israel’s role adds another layer. Israel joined the US in last year’s strike on Iran. Many expect Israel would participate again if Washington launches another campaign. That possibility increases the risk of wider regional escalation. Trump has not outlined a detailed post conflict plan. He has not clarified whether his administration seeks regime change or limited military objectives. Without clear answers, uncertainty continues to shape US Iran relations.
