Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared, are purchasing the majority stake in one of the most recognizable sports clubs in the world. LA Lakers Set for Record $12.5bn Sale to Kushner and Iger In a deal that was unanimously authorized by the NBA Board of Governors in October 2025. Walter purchased his stake from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion (£7.45 billion), setting a previous record. Kushner and Iger said: “As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. “We greatly admire the vision and leadership of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. How Mark Walter Became Lakers Owner “Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.” In 1979, Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers for $67.5 million (£50 million), which also included the Los Angeles Kings hockey franchise and the Kia Forum, a Los Angeles arena. Before a contract was finalized with Walter, who also holds a part in the LA Dodgers alongside Todd Boehly, ownership was transferred to his six children in a trust upon his death in 2013. Lakers Have 17 NBA Championships “One of the greatest honors of my life has been owning the Los Angeles Lakers,” Walter remarked. The community, the supporters, and a city that views this team as family are what I will take with me, even if it has been an incredible investment. I appreciate being welcomed into this chapter by Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff. Los Angeles owns the Lakers, and I’m confident that the greatest is still to come.” The LA Lakers have won 17 NBA titles, one fewer than the Boston Celtics’ record of 18. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal regarding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned plan before the sale. How the Buss Family Owned the Lakers I am appreciative to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for allowing me to be a part of this chapter. Los Angeles owns the Lakers, and I am confident that the greatest is still to come.” With 17 NBA titles, the LA Lakers are one behind the Boston Celtics’ record of 18. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal surrounding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned attempt to sell private investors shares in the governing body’s competitions before the agreement. It was anticipated that the planned investor group for the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative would be led by Kushner’s American venture capital firm, Thrive Eternal. US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Hayden Panettiere's death at 36 has prompted an emotional tribute from Wladimir Klitschko as officials continue to investigate the cause of her death.
Wladimir Klitschko, the former partner of Hayden Panettiere, claims that his family is in “profound shock and grief.”
    August 18, 2026
She met Brian Hickerson, her new lover, just before Nashville's production concluded. Later on, he became aggressive; according to Panettiere, he would smack her head against the wall and once battered her face so severely that she was unable to leave her home for weeks. In her 36 years, she faced more challenges than most, and she tried to deal with them by writing her book, which was released in May. She concluded by assuring readers that she had learned to "walk hand in hand with my triumphs and my tragedies, because they have made me who I am" and that she had come to terms with her past while maintaining optimism for the future.

Screen Time for Young Children: Risks, Guidance, and Practical Steps for Parents Screen use is now part of everyday life, but for children under five it needs careful control. Health and education guidance suggests limiting screen exposure to protect early development. For children under two, screen use should be minimal and, if used, shared with an adult. For ages two to five, the recommended limit is about one hour per day. What Screen Time Includes Screen time refers to any time spent using digital devices. This includes mobile phones, tablets, computers, and television. Research shows that nearly all children are exposed to screens by the age of two, which makes early habits especially important. Why Too Much Screen Time Can Be Harmful Young children’s brains develop rapidly, especially in the first five years of life. Around 90% of brain development happens before the age of five. During this period, children need real human interaction to build language, social, and emotional skills. Excessive screen use can affect: Language development, with some children speaking fewer words Social skills and emotional understanding Sleep patterns, especially when screens are used before bedtime Eyesight and physical health Healthy weight and activity levels Studies show a clear pattern. Children who spend several hours daily on screens often show weaker language skills compared to those with limited screen use. How Parents Can Manage Screen Time Managing screen time can feel difficult, especially with busy schedules. However, small changes can make a big difference. 1. Lead by example Children learn by observing adults. If parents reduce their own screen use, children are more likely to follow. 2. Create screen free routines Keep meals free from screens and encourage conversation Replace bedtime screens with reading or storytelling Avoid background television during family time 3. Focus on interaction Talk to children often, even babies. Treat them as active participants in conversations. This helps build language and thinking skills. 4. Use built in controls Most smartphones and tablets include tools like timers and app limits. These features can help control usage without constant supervision. 5. Encourage alternative activities Offer simple activities such as drawing, outdoor play, puzzles, or storytelling. These support creativity and development. Why Interaction Matters More Than Screens Human interaction plays a key role in early learning. Speaking, playing, and engaging with children helps develop language and thinking skills far more than passive screen watching. Even short moments of focused interaction can support emotional regulation for both children and parents. Slowing down and engaging with a child at their pace can improve connection and reduce stress.

Austria Moves Toward Social Media Ban for Children Under 14 Government Push to Protect Children Online Austria has announced plans to restrict social media use for children under the age of 14. The proposal comes after growing concerns about the impact of digital platforms on young users, especially related to mental health and addictive behavior. The plan is still under discussion, and authorities have not yet confirmed how or when it will be enforced. Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler said the government must act to protect children from harmful online experiences. He compared social media risks to substances like alcohol and tobacco, arguing that digital platforms also need strict rules to safeguard minors. According to him, children should be shielded from addictive algorithms that influence their behavior and well-being. Growing Global Trend of Restrictions Austria is not acting alone. Several countries are exploring or implementing similar measures. Australia has already introduced a ban for users under 16, while France has approved restrictions for those under 15. Other nations, including the UK, Spain, Denmark, Greece, and Ireland, are considering age limits ranging from under 15 to under 16. These moves reflect increasing global concern about how social media affects young people. Lawmakers argue that platforms expose children to harmful content and addictive design features. They also highlight the need for stronger digital protections, similar to those used in traditional media and other industries. Debate Around Age Verification and Enforcement One of the main challenges in enforcing such a ban is age verification. Austrian officials are discussing technical systems to confirm user age. They may use a broader European solution if available, or develop a national system if needed. Critics of social media companies point out that although platforms claim to restrict users under 13, enforcement is often weak. This raises questions about how effective any new restrictions will be unless strict verification methods are applied. Political Support and Public Opinion The proposal has received support within Austria’s coalition government. Leaders from different parties have emphasized the importance of guiding children toward responsible digital use. Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr stressed that social media must be used carefully, especially by young users. Political analysts suggest that such measures are popular with the public, particularly among parents. The issue also gives politicians an opportunity to show action in areas that directly affect families, even as other challenges remain in the economy and public services. Wider Reforms Alongside the Ban The social media proposal is part of broader reforms in Austria’s education system. These changes include increased focus on subjects like democracy and artificial intelligence, along with adjustments to traditional coursework such as reducing Latin lessons.
