Third British National Suspected of Hantavirus on MV Hondius Cruise as Cases Rise Outbreak Overview on MV Hondius Health officials are monitoring a hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius. A third British national is now suspected to have the infection. The case involves a passenger currently on the remote Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha after the ship made a stop there in mid April. Two other British men already have confirmed infections. One patient remains in a stable condition in the Netherlands after evacuation from the ship. The second patient is in intensive care in South Africa following an earlier medical transfer. One passenger has died, and the total number of confirmed cases has reached five. Confirmed and Suspected Cases Authorities confirmed that the suspected third British case is under observation and has not yet been fully diagnosed. Two additional British nationals are self isolating at home in the United Kingdom. They show no symptoms and are isolating voluntarily after possible exposure. A group of 30 passengers from around a dozen countries disembarked earlier at St Helena on 24 April. Seven of them were British citizens. Four British passengers who left the ship remain on St Helena and continue to show no symptoms while staying in contact with health teams. Evacuation and Medical Response Medical teams evacuated three patients from the ship earlier in the week. Martin Anstee, a 56 year old retired police officer and expedition guide, was flown to the Netherlands along with a 41 year old Dutch crew member and a 65 year old German passenger. He is currently in stable condition and reports that he feels well. Health authorities plan to send medical support to remote island locations where exposed passengers are being monitored. Teams are focusing on early detection and containment to prevent further spread. Passenger Monitoring and Isolation Measures Passengers who remain on board the MV Hondius will be flown back to the United Kingdom via a chartered aircraft once the ship reaches the Canary Islands. Officials confirmed that all returning passengers will need to isolate after arrival, even if they show no symptoms. Health monitoring continues for all exposed individuals across multiple locations, including Europe, Africa, and remote Atlantic islands. Operator Response and Contact Tracing The cruise operator Oceanwide Expeditions stated that the first confirmed infection was reported on 4 May. The company also confirmed that all passengers who had disembarked were contacted and informed about potential exposure risks.

Three Killed After Mount Dukono Volcano Eruption in Indonesia Deadly Eruption Hits Mount Dukono During Hiking Trip At least three hikers lost their lives after Mount Dukono erupted on Friday morning in Indonesia. The volcano sent a huge column of ash nearly 10 kilometers into the sky, creating panic among hikers and nearby residents. The victims were part of a group of 20 hikers from Singapore and Indonesia who were climbing the volcano despite safety restrictions issued by local authorities. Rescue teams later evacuated the remaining members of the group and shifted them to nearby hospitals for treatment and medical checks. Officials confirmed that two Singaporean men, aged 27 and 30, died in the incident along with a local woman from Ternate. Rescue workers have not yet recovered the bodies because continuous eruptions and dangerous terrain are slowing the operation. Rescue Operation Faces Major Challenges Local police and rescue teams said strong volcanic blasts and falling ash have made it difficult to reach the crater area where the victims are believed to be located. Authorities temporarily stopped the recovery mission after nightfall and plan to continue the search on Saturday morning. Two porters from the hiking group stayed behind on the mountain to support rescue workers during the operation. Witnesses near the volcano reported that Mount Dukono continued releasing hot ash and volcanic material throughout Friday afternoon. A local resident helping rescuers said ash clouds and rocks were still coming out from the crater area for several hours after the eruption. Officials remain concerned because the volcano has shown continuous activity in recent months. Authorities Had Already Warned Hikers Indonesian authorities had repeatedly warned people not to climb Mount Dukono because of increased volcanic activity. The volcano has erupted more than 200 times since March last year, making it one of the country’s most active volcanoes. One hiking guide present during the eruption said pressure inside the volcano had likely been building for several days. He described Friday’s eruption as extremely powerful and dangerous. Eyewitnesses also reported that several other hikers were on the mountain when the eruption happened. Officials are now investigating how visitors managed to enter the restricted area despite safety warnings. Indonesia’s Volcano Risks Remain High Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The country has more than 120 active volcanoes, and authorities regularly monitor volcanic activity to reduce risks for local communities and tourists. The latest Mount Dukono tragedy highlights the dangers of ignoring official safety warnings near active volcanoes. Rescue operations are expected to continue until all victims are recovered from the mountain.

Hantavirus Outbreak Reported on Atlantic Cruise Ship Incident Overview Health authorities have reported a serious hantavirus situation on a cruise ship sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel, MV Hondius operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, was traveling from Argentina toward Cape Verde when multiple passengers fell ill. Three people have died during the incident. A Dutch married couple and a German passenger were among the deceased. Officials have confirmed two hantavirus cases so far, including a Dutch woman who later died after leaving the ship. Investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the remaining deaths. Two crew members also developed breathing related symptoms while on board. One showed mild illness and the other required urgent medical attention. What Is Hantavirus Hantavirus refers to a group of viruses carried mainly by rodents. Humans usually become infected when they breathe in particles contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. This virus does not typically spread from person to person. Infection usually happens in environments where rodent activity is present and contaminated dust becomes airborne. People may also get infected through rodent bites or scratches, but this is less common. How the Virus Spreads The main transmission route involves inhalation of infected particles in the air. When dried rodent waste is disturbed, it can release virus particles into the environment. Risk increases in enclosed or poorly cleaned areas where rodents live or have lived. Travel environments, storage areas, or remote locations can increase exposure risk if rodent control is weak. Symptoms and Health Risks Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome This form affects the lungs. Early signs include fever, fatigue, and muscle pain. As the illness progresses, patients may experience headaches, dizziness, chills, and stomach discomfort. Breathing problems can develop suddenly. In severe cases, the condition becomes life threatening. Health data shows a high death rate once respiratory symptoms begin. Hemorrhagic Fever with Kidney Complications This form affects the kidneys and blood vessels. Symptoms may include low blood pressure, bleeding inside the body, and kidney failure. It can become severe without fast medical care. Current Cases Under Investigation A 69 year old British passenger is currently in intensive care in South Africa and has tested positive for hantavirus. The Dutch woman who died after leaving the ship also tested positive. Health officials are still testing crew members who showed respiratory symptoms. Results have not yet confirmed whether they are infected with the virus.

Robots Step In as Waste Industry Struggles to Hire Staff Recycling Plant Faces Labour Shortage Challenges A busy recycling facility in Rainham, East London, is dealing with ongoing staff shortages in a tough working environment. The site is operated by Sharp Group, a family run waste management company. The plant processes around 280,000 tonnes of mixed recycling every year. Workers sort materials on fast moving conveyor belts where items like shoes, broken electronics, and construction waste pass by constantly. The job is physically demanding and noisy. Dust is present throughout the facility, making conditions even harder for staff. Safety risks are also a concern in this sector, which reports higher injury and illness rates compared to many other industries. High Turnover Continues to Pressure Operations Keeping staff has become a major challenge. The facility reports an annual turnover rate of around 40 percent. Line supervisor Ken Dordoy explains that many workers struggle with the pace. He notes that pickers are constantly working as the belt never stops for long, which leads to frequent staff replacements. To manage fatigue, workers rotate between different sorting tasks every short interval, and the belt is occasionally paused to give brief breaks. Robots Enter Recycling Workflows To address staffing issues, the company is testing automation. A humanoid robot called Alpha is being trained to assist with sorting waste. The robot has been developed by RealMan Robotics in China and is being adapted for recycling operations by TeknTrash Robotics in the United Kingdom. Unlike traditional industrial machines, this robot is designed to move in a human like way. Developers believe this approach allows it to work within existing facilities without major redesigns. Training the Robot to Sort Waste Alpha is still in early development and is undergoing training. It is learning how to identify different items on the conveyor belt and how to pick them up correctly. A worker uses a virtual reality headset to demonstrate sorting techniques. These movements are recorded to help train the robot. According to TeknTrash founder and chief executive Al Costa, the training process focuses on two main skills. The first is recognising materials on the belt. The second is learning how to handle and lift them safely and efficiently.

Met Gala Looks Inspired by Famous Artworks The Met Gala is known for turning fashion into a form of living art. Held every year on the first Monday of May, it celebrates the opening of the Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s theme, “Fashion is Art,” encouraged guests to express their personal connection between clothing and artistic expression. Celebrities arrived in bold, creative outfits that reflected famous artworks from history. Each look told a visual story shaped by painters, sculptors, and cultural symbols. Rosé Channels Georges Braque’s “The Birds” Rosé, member of Blackpink and a New Zealand born singer, wore a simple yet elegant black strapless gown designed by Saint Laurent under Anthony Vaccarello. The dress appeared minimal at first glance, but the inspiration behind it added depth and meaning. Her outfit took cues from Georges Braque’s artwork The Birds (1952–53). The design included a striking bird shaped brooch, which became the highlight of her look. This detail directly connected the outfit to Braque’s artistic style and symbolism. Rosé worked closely with stylist Law Roach, often called an “image architect,” to shape the final concept. Together, they studied Saint Laurent’s past collections, including designs from spring 1998 and spring 2002 couture. During this process, they discovered how Yves Saint Laurent frequently used bird motifs, which helped refine the final direction. She later shared that the look combined classic Saint Laurent elegance with artistic storytelling inspired by fashion history and fine art. How Art Shaped the Met Gala Theme The Met Gala theme encouraged designers and celebrities to treat fashion as more than clothing. Instead, outfits became interpretations of paintings, sculptures, and historical references. Each look aimed to reflect the human body as an artistic subject across different eras. From bold symbolism to subtle references, the red carpet became a space where art history and modern fashion blended together.

Fake asylum industry: how claims are being fabricated A covert investigation reveals a disturbing pattern in certain parts of the asylum process. The report shows that some migrants and their advisers are faking evidence using fake identities, scripted stories, and staged proof. Zahid Hasan, a lawyer who secretly advised a reporter pretending to be a Bangladeshi college student was at the heart of this case. This student said he dropped out of college and wanted asylum to remain in the UK. The System is Being Exploited Akhand described the asylum process during a meeting at a office in Mile End Road, east London. He explained three routes to asylum: Sexual orientation Religious beliefs Politics The reporter was told that the man could take any one of the paths even if it wasn't true. Akhand provided legal assistance for 1,500 PS. The process included the preparation of documents, mock interviews and guidance through the application. He made it very clear, however, that "strong evidence" was needed in order to convince the authorities. Faking Evidence Investigation revealed that candidates were encouraged to fabricate false evidence to back up their claims. Akhand said he would connect his clients to people that could provide these services. The cost of these services is between PS2 000 and PS3000. If someone wanted to apply for asylum on the basis of atheism, it was suggested that they post offensive material about Islam and Prophet Muhammad in social media. It was intended to create threats that could be later used as evidence of persecution. Alternatively, he suggested that people join atheist blogs or platforms. Individuals could pay a fee to publish articles that would support their arguments. Some tools, such as AI, were suggested to quickly generate content. There are other tactics used Investigations revealed several additional methods of supporting fake asylum claims: Hire someone as your same-sex companion Articles in niche magazines: Paying for them Participating in protests is a way to show that you are politically active Fake online profiles and websites to create fake histories This is done to make a story believable enough for official scrutiny. An Growing Concern The case reveals serious flaws in the asylum process. Many asylum claims are based on stories told by individuals, making it difficult to determine what is true and what has been staged. Fraudulent practices can damage the trust of people in the system, even though genuine asylum seekers are at real risk. The authorities may be more careful, and this could impact those who have legitimate claims. The conclusion of the article is: This investigation reveals a network of small, but well-organized individuals who help fabricate asylum claims. The investigation shows just how easy it is to misuse sensitive categories such as religion, sexuality and political beliefs. It is urgent to find a balance between fairness and stricter verification.

Trump-Pope Rift Ignites Tensions among Conservative Catholics The tensions between Donald Trump, Pope Leo and conservative Catholics have been brought to the forefront of the media. It is nothing new for Catholic leaders to criticize Trump. The Church has often been enraged by his strict immigration policy. Catholic leaders and conservative Christians have been divided for years by these disagreements. The backlash that has been seen recently is different, and feels more intense. Controversy Deepens After Social Media Attack Trump's public criticism of Pope Leo as being too liberal, and weak in his stance on crime escalated the situation. The AI-generated picture he shared depicted him as Christ like. It sparked outrage in religious circles. It is striking that so many of his conservative Catholics supporters who have supported him for years are now against him. Iran War Creates Moral Divide It is more than just personal attacks. The issue is much more complex and has a strong connection to the conflict in Iran. Joseph Strickland has changed his position. He was known in the past for being a strong Trump supporter. He publicly rejected the Administration's position on the war. Strickland said that this conflict did not adhere to the standards for a "just" war. He also claimed that it was impossible to justify because of the innocent suffering caused by the civilians. He warned that religion should not be used to justify violence. He believes that faith should lead people to peace and not war. The Loyal Fans Take a Rare Break The shift in the political landscape is important. Strickland is known to have a close relationship with Trump. After previous conflicts with church leadership, he was even removed from his position. He is now urging his fellow Catholics, to reconsider their political loyalty. His belief is that the moral truth must come first before any political commitment. Seine message is very clear. It is important that no political leader replaces religious teachings or values. Catholic Voters' Political Attitudes The growing discord could have political implications. Trump's support among Catholic voters increased during the election of 2024. Pew Research Center data shows a clear divide within the Catholic Community. About 62% of White Catholics voted for Trump while 37% chose Kamala Harris. The trend was different among Hispanic Catholics. Around 41% of Hispanic Catholics supported Trump while 58% supported Harris. While Republicans have gained some ground in the Catholic vote, there are still deep divisions. Growing Uncertainty in the Future Trump's current dispute with Pope Leo is a reflection of broader struggles between faith and politics. This moment poses a question to many Catholics who are conservative. Is it better to remain loyal to a leader or shift your loyalty towards religious principles? Answering this question could have a profound impact on the future of politics in America.

Sri Lanka sends home 238 Iranian sailors after US Submarine attack Rescue and return of Stranded Sailors Sri Lanka returned 238 Iranian sailors stranded in the country after an attack by a US sub near their waters. After the attack, the sailors were stuck for more than a month in Sri Lanka. Aruna Jayasekara, Deputy Minister of Defence confirmed on Wednesday night that 32 sailors and 206 crew from the Iranian warship Iris Dena as well as a group from Irins Bushehr had left Sri Lanka. After completing the necessary procedures, authorities arranged for special flights to safely return them to Iran. Deathly attack on Iranian Warship On 4 March, a US sub launched a torpedo at the Iranian navy vessel Iris Dena. This attack took place about 40 km off the southern coast of Sri Lanka. A powerful explosion caused by the strike sank a ship. The attack claimed the lives of 104 sailors. Rescue teams later recovered 84 corpses. Iran chartered a plane to take them home. The Second Vessel Needs to Dock Immediately The second Iranian vessel, Irins Bushehr requested an emergency docking at Sri Lanka a day after the attacks. It was a vessel with engine issues that needed immediate help. Sri Lankan officials allowed the vessel to dock in a port located near Trincomalee, in northeastern Sri Lanka after several hours of discussions. About 15 Iranians will remain behind to maintain and operate the vessel which is anchored. Sri Lanka: Humanitarian Aid Sri Lankan authorities issued 30 day visas for the sailors, and offered them shelter at navy and airforce camps. Anura Kumara dissanayake, the president of Sri Lanka, said that his country had acted for humanitarian reasons. Sri Lanka, he said, aims to safeguard lives and maintain its neutrality in international conflicts. Growing Regional Tensions The sinking by the United States of America, Israel and Iran, of Iris Dena occurred early on in their ongoing conflict. This attack was a significant escalation of tensions in the entire region. Iran launched strikes in retaliation for the attack against US-allied nations of the Middle East. Sri Lankan Neutral Stance Sri Lanka's non-alignment policy has been in place since 1948, when it gained independence. Sri Lanka continues to have balanced relations both with Iran and with the United States. The officials stressed that they were responding based on their humanitarian responsibilities, not political affiliation.

US-Kuwaiti Journalist Detained Over Social Media Posts According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, an American-Kuwaiti Journalist was detained by Kuwaiti authorities after sharing content online related to the conflict between the United States and Israel as well as Iran. Reporter Missing since March Ahmed Shihab Eldin, an acclaimed media commentator, hasn't been seen since the 2nd of March. Authorities detained him while he was visiting his family in Kuwait. According to the watchdog group, he faces several charges including spreading false news. Kuwaiti officials have yet to make a statement publicly about this case. The War Content Charge According to reports, the accusations stemmed from online posts Shihab Eldin shared. A video of a US F-15 fighter plane crashing in Kuwait City was included. The images he shared allegedly show a pilot that had ejected from his aircraft and land in Al-Jahra. The authorities accuse him that he has misused his phone and harmed national security. These charges, say rights groups, are often vague and used as a way to limit independent reporting. Increased crackdown on online content Kuwait and the other Gulf states have tightened their controls over online activity. Officials warned the public not to post videos and images that are unverified, particularly those associated with military operations. Authorities in the area have arrested several people for sharing footage showing Iranian drone and missile attacks. Anyone found guilty of spreading misleading or false information regarding military issues could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison under current law. Kuwait Reports Casualties Kuwaiti officials claim that Iranian attacks caused many deaths. Three civilians, as well as two soldiers and two borderguards are among the dead. Six US military personnel have also reportedly been killed in Iraq. Instances involving military gear have occurred as well. Kuwait's Air Defense Systems accidentally shot down 3 US fighter planes during this conflict. Demands for immediate Release The Committee to Protect Journalists urged Kuwaiti officials to immediately release Shihab Eldin and to drop all charges. According to the group, his arrest is indicative of a trend where national security laws are being used more and more often as a way to silence journalists or control their information.

Spain Legalizes 500,000 Migrants Undocumented in Major Workforce Reform The Government Grants Legal Status Spain approved an important policy that will give legal status for around 500,000 migrants who are undocumented. This decision allows people who qualify to work and live legally in Spain. Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain, said that the decision reflects both fairness and an economic necessity. He said that migrants already play a large role in the daily lives of Spanians and make a significant contribution to the society. The Government aims at integrating them in the formal workplace and strengthening public services. The New Plan: What it Offers Migrants can request a residence permit that is renewable for one year. The applicant must prove that they've lived in Spain at least for five months. The applicant must have no criminal records. The application period begins on April 16 and ends at the end June. The size of the population without documentation is expected to lead to a large number of applications. Economic and Social Reasons Behind the Policy Spain's government claims that it needs to hire more people due to the ageing of its population. The government also argues that immigrants help to support economic growth, and they fill important job gaps. Pedro Sanchez stated that migrants played a significant role in the development of modern Spain, and they should be acknowledged for this. He pointed out, too, that Spanish migrants have historically left the country for similar reasons. Funcas estimates that there are 840,000 undocumented immigrants in Spain. The majority are thought to be from Latin American countries. The Public's Reaction to Political Debate Opposition People Party is strongly opposed to the plan. The People Party claims that the plan could lead to more illegal migration, and the government underestimated the number of people who may apply. Leaders of the opposition have said that the total number of applicants could be as high as one million and described this move in an unacceptable manner. The Catholic Church, on the other hand has supported this decision and called it an humanitarian response. Vocalizations of Migrants Some migrants welcomed this announcement. According to a Bolivian graphic artist living in Spain, legal status will allow for better employment opportunities and stability. The policy, he believes, will also benefit the Spanish Economy through taxation and formal employment. History of Spanish Migration Policy In the past, Spain introduced legalization programmes of a similar nature. In 2005, more than a half million people were granted residency by a former government.
