Laser hair removal device triggers bomb scare at Melbourne Avalon Airport Airport shut down after suspicious luggage found Avalon Airport near Melbourne was partially closed for several hours on Thursday morning after security staff flagged a suspicious item during routine screening. The airport sits about 50 km southwest of Melbourne and mainly handles domestic flights. The alert led to delays and a short shutdown of parts of the terminal. International services were not affected. Bomb squad called in after screening alert Security officers detected an unusual package during baggage screening just before 06:00 local time. They immediately alerted Victoria Police, who sent in the bomb response unit as a precaution. The item appeared suspicious on X ray, especially because it included a laser hair removal device and a hot chocolate container. Device confirmed safe after investigation After a full inspection, police confirmed the package was harmless. It contained only a cosmetic laser hair removal device and packaging for hot chocolate. The passenger who owned the bag was briefly detained but later released without any charges. Passenger cooperation slowed response Victoria Police Acting Inspector Nick Uebergang said the incident took longer to resolve because the passenger was not fully cooperative at the start. He said early cooperation could have reduced delays and helped clear the situation faster. Airport response and passenger disruption An airport spokesperson said the response showed strong security screening and quick precautionary action. They added that safety checks were carried out immediately to protect passengers and staff. Travellers described confusion inside the terminal as the airport went into lockdown. Some passengers were told to wait in the car park with limited facilities while the situation unfolded. One traveller said there was little information at first, but the presence of multiple police vehicles made it clear something serious was happening. Budget airline Jetstar operates most services from Avalon Airport. Two domestic flights were cancelled, and several others faced delays before normal operations resumed roughly four hours later.

Woman survives 330ft mountain crash after phone alert triggers emergency rescue Sudden loss of control on Horseshoe Pass Natalia Sidorska, 32, was driving alone on Horseshoe Pass in Denbighshire late in June 2025 when her car went out of control on a sharp bend. She was unfamiliar with the road and admitted she may have been driving too fast for the 40mph limit. The car left the road and fell down a steep mountainside, dropping more than 100m, which is around 330ft. Car rolls down steep slope and catches fire The vehicle rolled repeatedly down the slope before coming to rest in a field. Natalia remembers the moments clearly as the car tumbled and airbags deployed during impact. When the car stopped, she found herself trapped and injured. She struggled to understand what had happened and soon heard the sound of fire starting inside the vehicle. The fire spread quickly, leaving her very little time to react. Escape under extreme conditions Natalia tried to open the doors but could not move properly due to injuries to her leg. She was still inside the burning car and had to act quickly to survive. She managed to get herself out moments before the vehicle became fully engulfed. Phone crash detection alert triggered rescue response Her iPhone automatically detected the crash using built in sensors. The device sent an alert to emergency services and shared her location details. Rescue teams were alerted quickly and were able to respond to the remote location. Mountain rescue teams later estimated the fall distance at over 100m. Natalia later said the phone alert likely played a major role in ensuring help arrived in time. Recovery and reflection after the crash She spent four months in hospital recovering from her injuries. She described the aftermath as more difficult than the crash itself. She often drove alone to clear her mind before the incident. On this trip, it was her first time driving along that road.

Whistler’s Mother: Why a Quiet Portrait Became a Global Icon A painting that was never meant to be famous “Whistler’s Mother” is one of the most recognized artworks in the world today. The painting’s real title is Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter’s Mother (1871). It is now being shown at Tate Britain as part of a major exhibition on James Abbott McNeill Whistler. The portrait shows Whistler’s mother seated in a simple, calm pose. At the time it was created, no one expected it to become a cultural icon. An unexpected beginning The painting came together by chance. In late 1871, Whistler’s usual model could not attend a sitting due to illness. His mother, Anna McNeill Whistler, stepped in reluctantly. She later reflected on the moment and saw it as meaningful, writing that disappointments can sometimes lead to good outcomes. Whistler was living in London at the time and working steadily as an artist. The portrait was not planned as a major work. It was one of many pieces he created during that period. Near destruction and early rejection The painting almost did not survive its early years. It was nearly destroyed in a train fire in 1871. Later, it also faced rejection risks from the Royal Academy exhibition in 1872. It only made it into the show after support from Whistler’s friend Sir William Boxall. Even after it was displayed, public reaction was weak. Critics and viewers did not respond with enthusiasm. The work had a difficult start in the art world. Why critics did not understand it At the time, Victorian audiences preferred clear stories in art. They liked paintings based on history, mythology, or literature. Whistler worked differently. He used simple titles like “harmony,” “nocturne,” and “symphony.” These did not explain the subject clearly, which confused many viewers. Because of this, his work often faced criticism. People expected storytelling, but Whistler focused more on mood, form, and arrangement. From rejection to global fame Despite early criticism, Whistler’s Mother slowly gained recognition. Over time, it became one of the most reproduced artworks in modern culture. It has appeared in cartoons like Donald Duck, TV shows such as The Simpsons, and even in literary references like Nabokov’s Lolita. Its image moved far beyond the art world and entered popular culture. What once seemed like a simple portrait became a symbol of calm, discipline, and tradition. Why Whistler might not have liked its success Whistler often resisted how the public interpreted his work. He focused on artistic balance and composition rather than meaning or storytelling. The massive fame of this single painting likely frustrated him. It overshadowed much of his wider body of work, which he considered more important.

Google AI Chatbots and Search Results Face Misinformation Manipulation Risks AI systems are being influenced by fake online signals AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google Search AI features often rely on live web data. When these systems pull information from the internet, they do not only use trained knowledge. They also analyze what appears repeatedly across websites. This creates a weak point. If large amounts of misleading content appear online, the AI may treat it as trustworthy information. How misinformation enters AI answers The problem starts when bad actors publish or repeat false claims across multiple websites. These repeated signals can influence how AI systems interpret credibility. In one experiment, false claims were injected into online spaces. The AI systems then repeated those claims as if they were real facts. This showed how easily large language models can be influenced when web data is not properly filtered. Why this issue matters for users This problem becomes more serious when people use AI for important decisions. These include health advice, money planning, and news updates. Unlike traditional search engines that show multiple links, AI tools often give a single direct answer. This makes users more likely to trust the response without checking other sources. How tech companies are responding Google and other AI developers are now working to reduce this risk. They are improving spam detection systems and updating how AI summaries choose sources. They are also refining ranking signals so that low quality or manipulated content is less likely to influence AI responses. However, the issue is still not fully solved. The bigger shift in search behavior Search technology is changing from a list of links to direct answers. This shift improves speed but reduces user control over information verification. As a result, even small-scale manipulation can have a larger impact on public understanding. Experts warn that users should still cross check important information from reliable sources.

Robots Enter Clothing Manufacturing With a New Method From factories to fashion production Robots already work in car factories, hospitals, and airports. They can assemble complex machines and even assist in surgeries. But clothing production has remained mostly manual. Sewing fabric is still difficult for machines because soft materials shift during handling. Why sewing is hard for robots Fabric is flexible and moves during stitching. Robots struggle to keep two pieces perfectly aligned while working in motion. This makes traditional sewing automation slow and unreliable at scale. Cam Myers, founder of CreateMe, explains that alignment is the main challenge. His company decided to avoid sewing altogether and use a different approach. A new method using adhesive Instead of stitching, CreateMe uses glue to join fabric pieces. A robot applies adhesive, then presses layers together with precision. This process removes the need for needles and thread. The company already uses this system to produce women’s underwear. It plans to start making t shirts soon, with large scale production expected in the near future. Potential impact on global clothing production Today, most garments are made in Asia by low paid workers. Only a small share is produced in Western countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. CreateMe believes automation could shift production closer to home. Some clients want clothing labeled as made in the United States using locally sourced cotton and materials. The company says even moving a small portion of t shirt production back to the United States could reshape the industry. It also believes automation could reduce environmental impact by shortening supply chains. However, this shift could also affect millions of textile workers who rely on garment manufacturing jobs.

US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

The Batman Part II Begins Early Work in Liverpool as Gotham Comes to Life Again Liverpool is once again stepping into the role of Gotham City as early preparations begin for The Batman Part II. Gotham Police cars, yellow taxis, and film vehicles were seen across key parts of the city, including near Queensway Tunnel and outside St George’s Hall. The sequel, directed by Matt Reeves, is expected to continue the dark world introduced in the 2022 hit The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson. The new film is scheduled for a cinema release in October 2027 and is expected to feature Scarlett Johansson and Charles Dance. Early Filming Activity in Liverpool This week, film vehicles were spotted around central Liverpool, giving fans a first look at the production returning to the city. A damaged Gotham Police cruiser was also seen near Queensway Tunnel, adding to the growing buzz. Sources indicate that this stage of activity is part of a technical recce. The production team is not filming full scenes yet. Instead, they are testing locations and preparing for the main shoot. Principal photography is expected to start next month. Liverpool Returns as Gotham City Liverpool has already served as Gotham City in the earlier film. One of the most memorable scenes showed Batman flying past the Liver Building, which stood in for the Gotham City Police Department headquarters. The city has become a popular filming hub for major productions. Recent projects include a four part Beatles biopic directed by Sam Mendes, along with TV dramas such as Hamburg Days, The Cage, and This City is Ours. In 2025, the spin off Clayface was also filmed in Liverpool. Several scenes were shot around Liverpool Crown Court in Derby Square, with release planned for October.

Lupita Nyong o Responds to Casting Criticism in The Odyssey Actress Pushes Back on Helen of Troy Casting Debate Lupita Nyong o has responded to criticism surrounding her casting as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey. She has faced backlash online, with some critics arguing about the choice of a Black actress for the role drawn from Greek mythology. Elon Musk was among those who publicly questioned the casting. Nyong o addressed the discussion in an interview with Elle, stressing that the story is mythological and not tied to modern ideas of representation. She said the film reflects a broad and global cast and supports the director’s creative vision. Mythological Story and Creative Vision Nyong o explained that The Odyssey is based on ancient myth, not historical documentation. She highlighted that the production aims to present a wide range of actors to reflect a global storytelling approach. She expressed confidence in Nolan’s direction and said she stands behind his interpretation of the epic. According to her, the film’s scale and world spanning narrative justify a diverse cast. Focus on Work, Not Debate The actress also made it clear that she is not focusing on defending herself from criticism. She said she does not spend time reacting to every comment and accepts that opinions will continue regardless of her response. Nyong o added that being part of The Odyssey feels significant because of its epic scale and cultural reach. She described the project as large in scope and emotionally important for everyone involved. Industry Reaction and Ongoing Debate The casting has sparked wider debate about representation in historical and mythological adaptations. Supporters argue that myth based stories allow creative freedom in casting. Critics believe traditional depictions should remain unchanged. The discussion continues to grow across entertainment and social platforms as anticipation builds for the film’s release.

Channels Feature Not Affected

WhatsApp’s channels feature, with 51.7 million monthly active users in the EU in early 2025, remains outside this designation.

New Obligations for Meta

Under the DSA, very large platforms must take stronger steps to detect and remove illegal content. The rules may increase compliance costs and raise privacy concerns due to the volume of data processed.

Meta now has four months, until mid-May 2026, to ensure WhatsApp meets the additional requirements. A WhatsApp spokesperson said the company is committed to evolving safety and integrity measures in the EU and aligning with regulatory expectations.

Wider Context

Other platforms classified as very large under the DSA include Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Temu, and LinkedIn. These platforms also face enhanced responsibilities to safeguard users and combat harmful content.

AI Fake Evidence Scandal Damages South Korean Actor Kim Soo-hyun’s Career Police Seek Arrest Warrant Against YouTuber South Korean police are pursuing an arrest warrant for YouTuber and media personality Kim Se-ui over allegations that he created fake evidence using artificial intelligence to defame actor Kim Soo-hyun. Investigators claim the YouTuber manipulated screenshots of text messages and used AI-generated audio to falsely suggest that Kim Soo-hyun had dated late actress Kim Sae-ron when she was underage. The controversy reportedly began shortly after Kim Sae-ron’s death last year. She died at the age of 24, and the incident sparked widespread public discussion across South Korea’s entertainment industry. Alleged AI Audio and Edited Messages According to authorities, Kim Se-ui uploaded a voice recording online that appeared to feature Kim Sae-ron claiming she had been in a relationship with Kim Soo-hyun since middle school. Police now believe the recording was created using AI technology. They also allege that screenshots of private messages were altered to make it appear as though the actress had exchanged texts with the actor. Investigators say the false claims were intentionally spread online to attract attention and generate financial profit through views and engagement. Kim Se-ui has denied wrongdoing. In a recent video, he claimed the investigation against him was an attempt to interfere with his own reporting activities. Career and Mental Health Impact on Kim Soo-hyun The allegations severely affected Kim Soo-hyun’s public image and professional career. Police documents reportedly state that the scandal damaged his reputation, disrupted his business activities, and harmed his ability to continue working in the entertainment industry. Authorities also revealed that the actor is currently receiving psychiatric treatment due to the emotional stress linked to the controversy. Kim Soo-hyun has repeatedly denied all accusations connected to the case. South Korea’s Celebrity Culture Under Pressure Celebrities in South Korea often face intense public scrutiny. Even minor controversies can lead to major backlash, damaged careers, and loss of public support. Before her death, Kim Sae-ron had already faced criticism online following a 2022 drink-driving incident. Despite being considered one of the country’s most talented young actresses, she struggled with public criticism after the case. Following her death, rumors about her alleged relationship with Kim Soo-hyun quickly spread across social media platforms. The controversy gained momentum after the release of the alleged audio recording and edited messages. Kim Soo-hyun’s agency initially denied that the two stars had ever been romantically involved.

Tulsi Gabbard Resigns as US Intelligence Chief Amid Family Health Crisis Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation from the role of US director of national intelligence after her husband was diagnosed with bone cancer. She said her family now needs her full attention during a difficult time. Her resignation will officially take effect on 30 June. President Donald Trump confirmed that Aaron Lukas, the principal deputy director, will serve as acting intelligence chief after her departure. Gabbard Says Family Comes First In her resignation letter, Gabbard explained that her husband Abraham is preparing for a serious medical battle in the coming months. She said she could not continue managing one of the country’s most demanding national security positions while supporting her husband through treatment. Trump praised Gabbard for her work in the administration and said she had served the country with dedication. He also expressed confidence that her husband would recover successfully. Growing Tensions Over Iran Policy Gabbard remained one of Trump’s strongest political allies during the 2024 presidential campaign. She later became a key figure in the administration after taking charge of US intelligence operations in early 2025. However, tensions reportedly increased inside the administration over the conflict with Iran. Gabbard has often supported a less aggressive foreign policy and previously warned against deep military involvement overseas. Questions about Iran’s nuclear program also placed her under political pressure. During congressional hearings, lawmakers challenged differences between intelligence reports and statements made by the White House regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities. At one point, Trump publicly rejected Gabbard’s assessment that Iran was not actively building a nuclear weapon. He insisted Iran was very close to developing one and used that argument to defend US military action. Senior Officials Continue Leaving Administration Gabbard becomes the fourth Cabinet level official to leave the Trump administration this year. Earlier departures included Kristi Noem, Pam Bondi, and Lori Chavez-DeRemer. Her resignation also follows the earlier exit of former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent, who reportedly disagreed with the administration’s direction on Iran policy. Despite earlier disagreements, Gabbard later publicly supported Trump’s authority as commander in chief and defended his decisions regarding national security threats. What Happens Next? Aaron Lukas will temporarily oversee the Office of the Director of National Intelligence while the administration prepares to nominate a permanent replacement. Gabbard has not announced her future political plans. For now, she says her focus will remain on supporting her husband and family during his treatment.

The World Health Organization has raised the public health risk of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo from “high” to “very high” as infections continue to spread across the country. Health officials reported nearly 750 suspected Ebola cases and 177 suspected deaths linked to the outbreak. The virus strain involved in this outbreak is the rare Bundibugyo species, which currently has no approved vaccine. WHO Raises Alert Level WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the updated risk assessment during a health briefing in Geneva. He said the national threat level in DR Congo is now considered “very high,” while the regional risk across Africa remains “high.” However, the global risk is still classified as “low.” According to health officials, 82 Ebola cases have already been confirmed in DR Congo, including seven confirmed deaths. Rare Ebola Strain Creates Concern The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola worries experts because researchers have limited tools to fight it. Unlike other Ebola types, this rare species does not yet have a proven vaccine. Ebola is a dangerous viral disease that usually spreads from infected animals to humans. Fruit bats are believed to be the natural carriers of the virus. In some cases, outbreaks begin after people handle or consume infected animals. Although the Bundibugyo strain is considered less deadly than some other Ebola variants, it still kills nearly one third of infected patients. Oxford Scientists Working on New Vaccine Scientists at University of Oxford are currently developing a new vaccine to target the Bundibugyo strain. Researchers believe the vaccine could enter clinical trials within the next two to three months. The team is using technology similar to the one used to create the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine. Experts have already started animal testing in Oxford to study the vaccine’s effectiveness. However, researchers say they still need further testing before confirming whether the vaccine works safely in humans. India Could Help Produce Vaccine The Serum Institute of India is expected to help mass produce the vaccine once scientists provide medical grade materials. Meanwhile, another experimental Bundibugyo vaccine is also under development. Early reports suggest researchers may need six to nine months before they can begin testing that vaccine. Uganda Monitoring Situation Closely Health officials also confirmed two Ebola cases and one death in neighbouring Uganda. Authorities said both infected individuals had recently travelled from DR Congo. Despite the cases, WHO described the situation in Uganda as stable and said officials continue to monitor the spread carefully.
