WASHINGTON: Newly released emails from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate suggest that former U.S. President Donald Trump may have known about Epstein’s sexual abuse activities and allegedly spent significant time with one of Epstein’s main accusers, Virginia Giuffre.
The emails, made public by House Democrats on Wednesday, have reignited controversy surrounding Trump’s past relationship with Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. Trump, however, has repeatedly denied any involvement or prior knowledge of Epstein’s crimes, calling the accusations a “Democrat distraction.”
According to the Democrats on the House Oversight Committee, three newly surfaced emails “raise serious questions about Donald Trump and his knowledge of Epstein’s horrific crimes.”
Adding to the pressure, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson announced a vote next week on a motion to compel the Justice Department to release all remaining Epstein files.
In one 2011 message to Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein wrote that Trump had spent “hours” with Giuffre at his home, noting, “That dog that hasn’t barked is Trump. She spent hours at my house with him, and he’s never been mentioned.” Maxwell, who was later convicted of sex trafficking, replied, “I have been thinking about that…”
Another email, sent to author Michael Wolff in 2019, quoted Epstein as writing, “Of course he knew about the girls — he asked Ghislaine to stop.”
Republicans countered by releasing a batch of additional emails, in which Epstein called Trump “dirty.” The White House dismissed the leaked messages as “selective misinformation designed to smear President Trump.” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt added that Giuffre, who died by suicide in April, once said Trump “couldn’t have been friendlier” in their brief interactions.
The ongoing scandal has divided Trump’s supporters. Many in the MAGA base feel betrayed, believing the administration once promised full transparency about Epstein’s network. Trump allies within the FBI and his political circle, who previously fueled conspiracy theories about Epstein’s death, now face scrutiny for downplaying the new evidence.
Epstein and Trump were close friends for nearly 15 years and were frequently photographed together at parties, before falling out in 2004 over a property dispute. Despite Trump’s efforts to distance himself, the latest leaks have ensured that his Epstein ties remain a political flashpoint heading into election season.
