US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Lauren Laverne Reveals Smouldering Myeloma Diagnosis, Says She Feels Well Television and radio presenter Lauren Laverne has shared that she has been diagnosed with smouldering myeloma, a rare blood and bone marrow disorder that can sometimes develop into blood cancer. Despite the diagnosis, she reassured fans that she currently feels well and does not need medical treatment. The 48 year old broadcaster explained that the condition has no symptoms in her case. Doctors will continue to monitor her health through regular blood tests, MRI scans, and bone marrow examinations. She also said that the chance of the condition progressing into blood cancer is considered low. A Condition Found During Routine Monitoring Lauren Laverne revealed that doctors discovered the disorder during routine medical monitoring following her previous cancer diagnosis. She said the condition is unrelated to her earlier illness or a recent surgery. According to Laverne, many people with smouldering myeloma never realize they have it because it often causes no symptoms. Cancer survivors are more likely to receive an early diagnosis because they usually undergo regular health checks. Living With a Chronic Blood Disorder Although there is currently no cure for smouldering myeloma, Laverne said she does not require treatment at this stage. However, she explained that the condition slightly weakens her immune system, making regular medical monitoring essential. She admitted that receiving another serious diagnosis within two years has been emotionally challenging. Even so, she remains positive and hopes that sharing her experience will encourage others facing similar health issues. Message About Early Detection Laverne praised her family doctor for investigating her ongoing low iron levels instead of dismissing them. She encouraged people to speak up about persistent health concerns and seek specialist advice if something does not feel right. She believes early diagnosis can make a significant difference and urged others to advocate for their own health by asking questions and requesting further tests when necessary. Taking a Short Break Before Returning The presenter said she plans to take a short holiday before returning to work as usual. She also sent her support to everyone living with similar conditions and thanked those who have supported her throughout her health journey. Her announcement has drawn widespread messages of encouragement from fans and colleagues, who wished her good health and a smooth recovery.

Pakistan Tightens Foreign Media Restrictions

Journalist organizations have harshly criticized Pakistani authorities for imposing new limits on foreign media reporting in the nation.

All international media employees, including Pakistani nationals, are now required to obtain authorization before reporting from any location other than Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore.

In the majority of Pakistan, which presently ranks 153 out of 180 on the World Press Freedom Index, the limitations would put foreign media’s on-the-ground reporting at the whim and timing of the government.

Political analyst Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar remarked, “These rules are equivalent to choking international media in an ever-shrinking space.”

Pakistan Defends New Media Rules

Although restrictions on the media are nothing new, local media frequently under greater pressure than global ones.

According to Khokhar, “the public looks to the international media for independent reporting.” “Placing restrictions simply creates more room for the spread of disinformation and fake news.”

Coverage of the fatal demonstrations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir has drawn criticism from the authorities; international media must obtain permission to go.

The rules, which were released on Sunday, are intended to “provide an administrative mechanism” to check media, enable access, and coordinate reporting needs rather than to limit media, according to Pakistan’s government.

Pakistan Expands Foreign Media Curbs

The duration of obtaining a No Objection Certificate, or NOC, is not specified in the new regulations, known as the Foreign Media Facilitation Guidelines, 2026.

The capacity of foreign journalists to cover breaking news from the ground in the 240 million-person nation is severely limited because they already need NOCs.

Because they may more readily travel to or are permanently resident in areas like Peshawar or Quetta.

Pakistani citizens are frequently relied upon by international media sources to verify material.

Any contributor, including independent contractors, who reside outside of the three designated cities would need NOC authorization in order to cover a story under these new regulations.

Press Freedom Fears Grow Pakistan

Zaffar Abbas, editor of the Dawn daily, stated that these limits are absurd and completely unacceptable.

“I have been a journalist in this country for more than 40 years, covering both military regimes and several dictatorial civilian regimes, but I have never witnessed the installation of such limitations.

“Both freedom of movement and freedom of the press are compromised when journalists are required to get a NOC in order to travel outside of the three major cities.

According to the government, this is not a general limitation on people’s freedom of movement.

According to the standards, journalists who engage in “acts against ideology, sovereignty, security or public order of Pakistan” risk having their accreditation revoked.

Legal Concerns Over Pakistan Media Rules

But the government says any system of accreditation must retain the ability to act including when “the holder is involved in conduct affecting national security or public order”.

There is no statutory framework to support the guidelines, according to Salhuddin Ahmed.

“These ‘guidelines’ are merely an executive order and lack any legal backing from statute,” Ahmed says.

“They refer to the rules of business; those rules are only meant to regulate the internal functioning of government.

“Quite clearly, these guidelines are a hastily and ill-thought-out attempt to further curb independent reporting in Pakistan.”
