Rare ‘Cannibal’ Solar Storm to Light Up Northern Lights Across 22 US States

Rare ‘cannibal’ solar storm will create vibrant Northern Lights visible across 22 US states on November 11-12, 2025.

A spectacular celestial show is set to unfold across the United States as a rare “cannibal” solar storm is expected to bring the Northern Lights to 22 states on the night of Tuesday, November 11, 2025.

This extraordinary event occurs when two solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) collide in space. The faster CME overtakes and merges with the slower one, creating a more powerful shockwave that interacts with Earth’s magnetic field. The result? A G3-class geomagnetic storm capable of pushing auroras unusually far south.

Experts predict that the Northern Lights could be visible from the upper Midwest across the central states, reaching as far west as Oregon. The show is expected to peak between 10:00 p.m. EST Tuesday and 1:00 a.m. EST Wednesday, though it may appear at any time during the night.

To maximize your chances of witnessing the lights, find a dark location away from city lights and monitor real-time aurora forecasts or NOAA’s 30-minute updates. This rare solar phenomenon follows the last notable cannibal CME in April 2025, which caused a powerful G4 geomagnetic storm.

Prepare for a night of green, red, and purple auroras painting the sky—a must-see event for skywatchers and astronomy enthusiasts alike.
