Timothee Chalamet and Jessie Buckley were the big winners at the Critics Choice Awards, giving an early hint of who could be up for Oscars this year. Both actors are also nominated at the Golden Globes this weekend.
Chalamet won Best Actor for his role in Marty Supreme, where he plays a young man chasing his dream of becoming a table tennis champion. In his speech, he praised director Josh Safdie for telling a story that feels real and thanked his partner Kylie Jenner for her support.
“Josh, you made a story about a flawed man with a relatable dream,” Chalamet said. “And to my partner of three years, thank you. I couldn’t have done this without you.”
This award follows his Spotlight Award at the Palm Springs International Film Awards.
Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for Hamnet, a historical drama based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel. The film tells the story of Shakespeare and his wife grieving the loss of their 11-year-old son. Buckley thanked director Chloe Zhao and co-stars Paul Mescal and Emily Watson for making the project so meaningful.
Other film winners included One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which took Best Picture, and Paul Thomas Anderson, who won Best Director.
On the TV side, Netflix’s British drama Adolescence won four awards, including acting honors for Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, and Owen Cooper, who plays a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a classmate. Cooper, now 16, said the past year has been life-changing for him and his family.
Additional winners included Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy for Best TV Movie, horror film Sinners, which earned four awards including Best Ensemble, and the KPop track Golden from KPop Demon Hunters, which won Best Song.
