In August 2023, Bryan Randall died of ALS at the age of 54. Sandra Bullock was his partner. Eric Dane revealed in 2025. He was known as the actor of Euphoria, Grey’s Anatomy and Grey’s Anatomy. Early 2026, he died.
The public exposure of these cases has brought attention to a condition that strikes often without warning.
What is ALS?
ALS is an acronym for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Lou Gehrig Disease is another name for it. It was named after the baseball player Lou Gehrig who was first diagnosed with ALS in 1939.
ALS is a form of motor neurone disorder. The disease attacks the motor neurons – nerve cells which control voluntary muscle movements. .
In the United States, it affects approximately five per 100,000 people. It affects men slightly more than women.
The majority of patients only live a few short years following their diagnosis. There are some rare exceptions.
Why do some people develop ALS?
Even in cases where the gene involved is identical, it may not be. The same result can be achieved by different gene mutations.
Most patients do not have a family history of ALS. Researchers study possible triggers, such as lifestyle factors exposure. So far, no single cause explains every case.
Research Progress
Although there are no known cures, certain treatments may slow the progression of disease. Scientists are exploring new treatments, such as gene-targeted therapies. Scientists are getting closer to understanding ALS and its possible cure.
