However, not everyone was as lucky as Carr during the Los Angeles fires, which claimed 29 lives in all. Some of the victims had also disregarded evacuation orders in order to defend their houses, despite authorities' pleas for thousands of residents to go. The goals of Leverkus' group, which the British Columbian government does not formally recognize, underscore simmering tensions between those who enforce evacuation orders and those who disobey them in fire-prone areas. A man in the Village of Clinton was forced to be rescued by wildfire firefighters in British Columbia last week after he refused to leave his burning home. The minister in charge of disaster management in British Columbia reaffirmed in a wildfire update on Tuesday.

US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Meta confirms major shift in WhatsApp leadership

WhatsApp head Will Cathcart has stepped down from his leadership role after nearly seven years. During his tenure, he helped WhatsApp grow into one of the world’s largest messaging platforms, now serving over three billion users. He said the platform is in its strongest position so far and that the timing felt right to move on.

Cathcart will still remain within Meta’s leadership structure, so he will continue contributing in a broader role rather than fully leaving the company.

Kunal Shah appointed as new WhatsApp head

Meta has named Kunal Shah, founder of Indian fintech company Cred, as the new head of WhatsApp. The appointment highlights Meta’s growing focus on India, which is one of WhatsApp’s biggest user markets.

Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg praised Shah’s work, saying he built one of India’s most important technology companies. He added that Shah brings strong product thinking and a global outlook that fits WhatsApp’s scale and ambition.

About Kunal Shah and Cred

Kunal Shah founded Cred in 2018 in Bengaluru. The platform focuses on credit card payments and rewards users with high credit scores for timely bill payments. It positions itself as a members only financial service.

Before Cred, Shah worked as an investor and advisor for several startups across India and Southeast Asia.

He confirmed that he will continue holding his stake in Cred while taking on his new role at WhatsApp.

Meta’s investment and strategy shift

Cred has raised around 900 million dollars in funding from Meta. Reports suggest this may give Meta close to a 20 percent stake in the company, although it remains a minority investor.

Shah also stated that Meta will not have access to user member data through its investment.

Meta has been pushing WhatsApp toward stronger monetization. The company is exploring revenue streams such as business tools, ads, subscriptions, and AI based features.

WhatsApp’s role in India

India is WhatsApp’s largest market, with an estimated 853 million users. The platform plays a key role in communication and business messaging across the country.

Meta is now aiming to expand WhatsApp’s commercial ecosystem in India while keeping its core messaging service free for users.

Next Article UK Heatwave Warning: Temperatures May Reach 40C as Rare Red Alert Issued Extreme heat alert across England and Wales A rare red weather warning has been issued for parts of England and Wales as an intense heatwave is expected to push temperatures close to 40C later this week. The alert covers London, southern England, the Midlands, and parts of south east Wales. The Met Office has warned that the conditions could cause major disruption and serious health risks. When the heatwave will peak The red warning is in place from Wednesday morning to Thursday night, with the highest temperatures expected during this period. Forecasters say highs could reach 39C to 40C in some areas, especially across southern England. An amber warning is also active across much of central and southern England and most of Wales from Monday through Thursday. Travel disruption and daily life impact Officials expect widespread disruption to transport, schools, and daily routines. Some schools have already announced early closures due to safety concerns. High humidity will make the heat feel even more intense, increasing discomfort and risk for people outdoors or without cooling. Health risks and official warnings Health experts have warned that this level of heat can cause serious illness, especially for older adults, young children, and people with existing health conditions. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a red heat health alert for several regions. It is only the second time such a warning has been used for heat. Dr Agostinho Sousa, a senior health protection official, urged people to take the warning seriously and check on vulnerable family members and neighbours. Night temperatures and tropical nights Temperatures may remain unusually high overnight, staying above 21C to 22C in some areas. These are known as tropical nights and can increase health strain because the body does not cool down properly. How this compares to UK records If temperatures reach 40C, they would come close to the UK’s highest recorded temperature of 40.3C, which was recorded in 2022. That record remains the highest temperature ever measured in the country. UK Heatwave Warning: Temperatures May Reach 40C as Rare Red Alert Issued

Students have received assurances from the state administration that they would receive justice. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Jharkhand is looking into the claims related to the test. Over a dozen individuals have been taken into custody. Additionally, after candidates questioned the selection process, investigators are looking into the involvement of a private organization that administered portions of the exam. The administration decided to cancel the exam in question and two others after negotiating with demonstrators on Sunday. According to reports, three JPSC members also quit. This followed the resignation of JPSC chairman L Khiangte on July 22. On Monday, he was taken into custody after being questioned during the inquiry. However, demonstrators claim that a number of requests are yet unfulfilled, the most important of which is a probe into the irregularities.
